The Leapfrog Fridge Word Builder uses a multi-sensory approach including visual, auditory and tactile learning strategies. In other words, this learning toy presents information in a variety of ways. For example, when using the Leapfrog Fridge Word Builder, children see an alphabet letter, hold the alphabet letter in their hand and hear the sound the alphabet letter makes when it is placed into the word builder. The word builder slowly combines the sounds, while lights guide the reader through each letter sound, in order to read the entire word. The combination of these three approaches increases the learning success rate. It's not only educationally sound, but enjoyable as well!
As an educator, I can't say enough about this wonderful educational tool. The benefits include learning letter names (ABCs), phonics (letter sounds), sight word vocabulary (simple words that children can read at a glance), and "sounding out" word skills. With parental help, children can also practice basic rhyming skills. Children can experiment and explore by creating different "word families"or "rhyming words" such as the "at" family: (bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, pat, rat, sat, vat ) or the "et" family (bet, get, jet, let, met, net, pet, set, vet) by simply switching the first letter. Thus, the word builder not only builds words, but quick builds vocabulary as well! (I would, however, recommend that very young toddlers should begin first with the LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Alphabet Set (see below) in order to become more familiar with their ABCs.) Overall, I continue to be impressed by the educational value of Leapfrog products, and highly recommend their product line.
As a busy mom. I absolutely love the convenience of the magnetic fridge feature. The word builder, along with all the alphabet letters, firmly attach to the fridge so they are not scattered all over the floor (well…most of the time!) It makes for easy clean-up that children can manage themselves. The fridge is a perfect spot for play since it allows busy parents to finish making dinner while still being able to interact with children. Another great feature is that the word builder grows along with your child. Older children enjoy spelling bigger words or messages directly on the fridge using the magnetic letters, especially if you have the LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Lowercase Letters Expansion Pack.
