“12 Weeks Before Christmas 2010” Holiday Toys: Week #4 Board Games For Young Children (Toddler-Kindergarten)

 WEEK #4:

BOARD GAMES & CARD GAMES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

(TODDLER -KINDERGARTEN)

Young children certainly enjoy playing games! For this age group, playing games is actually a learning process. While children are having fun, they are being introduced to many new concepts such as following rules, taking turns, teamwork, and most importantly at this young age, the art of winning and losing graciously. These behaviors don't always come easy for children, and games are the perfect opportunity to practice some of these essential life skills. Playing games along with your children can be a great family activity, and allows adults to model appropriate game playing behavior.

Choosing educational games like those listed below, have the added benefit of combining learning with fun. For this age group, playing educational games reinforces basic concepts such as colors, numbers, counting, money etc. Many of these games are designed for non-readers and have simple, easy to follow directions. Educational games also develop pre-reading/reading skills such as letter recognition, sight vocabulary, spelling and concentration. These children's games also strengthen fine motor skills and improve dexterity since players are required to balance or manipulate game pieces.

Many of the old favorites and classics make some of your best choices, however there are some excellent new games available!

My First Games Set (Set of 4 Classics) The ideal set of "first" games for non-readers! Set include the 4 following classics: Candy Land, Chutes & Ladders, Memory Game & Hi Ho Cherry-O! Young children practice matching, colors, counting skills and more while having fun. Ages 3-7.

Candyland A memorable & classic "very first" game for non-readers. Young children use color cards to move gingerbread pawns through the winding path to Candy Castle. On the way they meet lovable characters and practice color matching skills. Simple instructions in both English & Spanish. Ages 3-6. A must "very first" game for households with little children.

Chutes and Ladders  A wonderful follow up game to Candy Land  in the beginners game series. This non-reader's game teaches numbers, counting and the rewards of good behavior. Children move their game piece from square 1 all the way to square 100 by using a numbered spinner. Along the way they are rewarded for good deeds by climbing up ladders to higher numbers, or receive the consequence of sliding down a chute to a lower number for bad behavior.  Ages 3-7.

Hasbro Candy Land Castle Game A cute variation of the classic Candy Land board game. Extremely basic and simple fun for little ones. A colorful 3-D King Candy Castle shoots out muti-colored, multi-shaped game pieces such as a red circle or green square. Players must match the colors and shapes on their gingerbread gameboards. Ages 3-6.

Hi Ho Cherry-O Fun and simple counting game for young children. Be the first to get 10 cherries in your bucket and pick your tree clean. The luck of the spinner determines how many cherries to add or remove from your bucket. Builds fine motor and counting skills. Ages 3-6.

Original MemoryDevelop memory and concentration skills with this classic game. Find the matching pairs by turning over cards 2 at a time. Game inlcudes 72 colorful picture cards with storage tray. Ages 3-6.

Snails Pace Race Have fun racing these colorful wooden snails. Predict which snails will cross the finish line first and last. Roll the color ocde dice to move snails down the track. A wonderful game which teaches color recognition and numbers. Ages 4-8.

ThinkFun Zingo   An award winning reading game! This exciting & educational variation of Bingo features 72 picture tiles which teach simple sight vocabulary and matching skills to pre-readers & readers ages 4-7. An instant favorite! See Little Ones review of ThinkFun Games for children of all ages.

Don't Break the Ice Loads of fun for young players! Tap out ice blocks with plastic mallets one at a time, but you must keep the polar bear from falling through the ice. An enjoyable game that uses simple strategy and refines fine motor skills. (You can't hit the ice too hard or too soft.) Ages 4-6 plus.

Scrabble Junior Scrabble for juniors teaches children to match letter tiles to picture words on a grid. An added benefit is that this game grows with your child. Simply flip the gameboard over for more advanced game play. Whoever has the most chips on the board wins. Ages 5-8.

Monopoly Junior Edition Superb junior version of this popular board game. Monopoly Jr. is based on owning ticket booths to amusement park rides such as bumper cars or rollercoasters. A  fun and wonderful way for young children to practice basic math and money skills. This junior version uses smaller money increments, has a smaller gameboard and takes less time to play which makes it perfect for ages 5-8.

Great States Junior A great introduction to the map of the United States for young children. Children race the clock while matching shapes, pictures and names of locations on the map. An enjoyable and educational geography experience for ages 5-8.

Children’s eBooks for the Kindle

UPDATE: October 5, 2011

Kindle Fire with Children's Books See Little Ones Review of the new Kindle Fire for the most recent information about children's color ebooks for young readers. Soon to be released on 11/15/11, the Kindle Fire is a whole new option for even the littlest readers!

Kindle FIre: Recommended Full Color eBooks for Children (Ages 1-3)

Kindle FIre: Recommended eBooks for Children (Ages 4-8)

Kindle Fire: Recommended eBooks for Older Children/Teens (Ages 9-12)

Published: October 10, 2010

Ok, so we all know that there a lot of good books available on the Kindle for adults…but what about for kids? What types of eBooks are available for children and at what age level? These are all questions that accompany the latest technology. After doing some research, I was pleasantly surprised to see just how many well-known, quality series and books are available for children of all ages.

For the Infant-3 age group, keep in mind that the original Kindle does not display color, but rather displays black & white or "grayscale" images. For younger children with shorter attention spans, this type of display may not be stimulating enough to grab and hold their attention. There are some Kindle titles available for this age group, but they are somewhat limited, and are not the typical toddler bestsellers you might be looking for.  However, with the introduction of color technology, the choices for this age group will definitely expand rapidly.

If you concerned about handing over a Kindle to a small child to hold, consider this option. The eBook alternative for ages 3-7 is The V.Reader Animated E-Book System by V-Tech .  It definitely works better for this younger age group, is less expensive and is an awesome children's eReader. (See more specifics in the Little Ones review of this highly recommended, educational product.)

For the 4-8 age group, I especially recommend several great KIndle series such as: the Magic Tree House series; Beverly Cleary's Ramona series; Cam Jansen Mysteries; A-Z Mysteries; the Flat Stanley series, Curious George, Berenstain Bears and more. They are all great choices for developing readers with interesting plots and amusing characters. I was pleased that Kindle offered so many excellent literature choices for this age group. The Kindle brings excitement and a brand new twist on reading for these emerging readers.

For the 9-12 age group, I highly recommend Rick Riordan's series including his latest, Percy Jackson. Rick Riordan skillfully combines adventure, friendship and mythology into his incredible stories. Definitely high interest, action packed reading! Other good Kindle choices are the Artemis Fowl series; the classic Narnia series and Ranger's Apprentice. There are also many pop culture choices available. The Kindle is a good match for this older, tech savy & sophisticated group of readers.

Finally, there are numerous titles, including many classics, at each age level that are included free with your Kindle. I was amazed to discover that this fast developing eBook technology actually had so many kid-friendly choices. The wave of the future is here and it is something to see for yourself.

Homework Help Series: Packing Up For School

We've all been there…searching at the last minute for the misplaced homework sheet, the school library book, the permission slip, you name it… all right before your child dashes out the door to school. It is  frustrating to have completed homework assignments and school supplies forgotten at home. A simple solution to this problem is designating a highly visible and specific location (preferably by the door) where packed book bags can be left at the end of the night, completely ready for the next morning. Children are more prone to forget things if they are packing up during the "early morning make it to the bus stop on time rush." Children who prepare their supplies the night before are less rushed, and also benefit from having all night to remember and add forgotten items into their backpacks.

Try the same technique for after-school extra-curricular activities. Recycle your child's old backpacks by using them to organize after-school activity stuff. For example, have a separate bag for religion class, dance class, karate…you name it! Pack the bag with everything they need for their activity and leave it in a designated spot. Make sure that items are returned into the bag when they're done and….you're ready for next class. During the week, place any necessary items such as homework, permission slips or clean clothing into the bag. When the activity rolls around again, just have your child grab the pre-packed backpack and go!!!

“12 Weeks Before Christmas 2010” Holiday Toys: Week #2 Toys For Little Fingers (Toddler-Preschool)

WEEK #2:

TOYS FOR LITTLE FINGERS (TODDLER-PRESCHOOL)

Little Fingers need some extra strengthening and practice when it comes to developing fine motor skills. Fine motor or dexterity skills refer to your child's ability to use his or her finger/hand muscles properly so that he or she can successfully manipulate basic tools and manage small pieces. For example, children use basic fine motor skills when completing daily tasks such as holding a pencil, drawing, writing, cutting with scissors or even tying a shoelace. Fine motor skills also include hand/eye coordination. Daily practice of dexterity skills will strengthen the finger motions and accuracy needed to accomplish these basic, and eventually more challenging tasks. Choosing toys that develop and improve your child's hand/eye coordination and dexterity skills will provide an enjoyable fine motor workout for little fingers. The following toys encourage the development of these skills by requiring children to manipulate small pieces (grasping, pushing, pulling, lacing, stacking, rotating etc.) These types of toys can be commonly found in preschool classrooms and even occupational therapy settings. Toddlers and preschoolers love playing with these types of toys, and don't even realize that they are developing important fine motor skills in the process.

Homework Help Series: Color Coding Books

A simple, yet very effective homework strategy is color coding your child's books. How many times has your child accidentally brought home the wrong notebook or textbook? After all, when you have several identical black and white marble notebooks it is easy to grab the wrong one. In order to alleviate the problem, designate a particular color for each subject area. For example, Math books and notebooks should be red. Purchase red marble notebooks, red spiral notebooks or red 3 ring binders just for Math. Cover your child's Math textbook with a stretchy fabric book cover in red or in extra sturdy red wrapping paper. Choose the color green for all Science books and purchase all of your Science supplies in that color. Repeat for each subject area choosing basic, easy to find colors. Some schools that employ this strategy will even standardize the color code for subject areas so check first before making your purchases. Try to use same color code year after year since switching subject colors can confuse students who have already mastered the technique.

This strategy can be used for young children who are having difficulty organizing their materials, but it is particularly useful for older students who switch classes and store books in a hall locker. The color system keeps kids organized and makes those quick changes between classes smoother. You may even wish to print up your child's daily schedule in color so that it coordinates with their books.
